Japanese audio manufacturer Audio-Technica has unveiled a stylish pair of new, true wireless headphones at IFA 2019.
The memorably named ATH-CKS5TW and ATH-CK3TW are both lightweight, Bluetooth buds, with an automatic power on/off feature that activates as soon as they’re plucked from the charging case.
The latter model comes in at £99; a price that’ll get you a pair of compact earbuds with 5.8mm drivers, six hours of battery life and a low-latency function that its makers say will help to avoid any audio disruption due to poor connectivity.
The more expensive pair will set you back £149, and that extra money brings with it 10mm drivers with a “dual-layer diaphragm”, in Audio-Technica’s words, for delivering accurate bass sounds. Battery life is promised at 15 hours of continuous playback, with scope for 30 more hours if plugged into the charging case.
Both pairs are compatible with aptX and SBC audio codecs, with the ATH-CKS5TW also supporting AAC codecs. The £99 pair come in black, white, blue and red, while the £149 pair come in a black finish.
Intro to turntabling
Audio-Technica also launched an affordable turntable, the AT-LP5x. The record player is the direct follow up to the company’s AT-LP5, and comes with the company’s newer AT-VM95E Dual Moving Magnet stereo cartridge.
True to the vinyl resurgence, the AT-LP5x design is inspired by Audio-Technica’s classic turntables of the 1960s and 1970s, although it also has a USB output if you’d like to convert your records into digital files. There’s no escaping the present, and at £349 the AT-LP5x makes for a convincing low-to-mid-range option for your 21st-century living room.
The turntable and the £149 headphones are both due to hit shelves in September. You’ll need to wait a little longer for the £99 headphones, which are due in November.
