This GoPro for cyclists combines a smart tail light with laser-projected bike lanes

Cyclists often uses GoPros as their helmet-based dash cams, but Apeman's new camera takes safety to another level with a system that includes several useful features, including an electronic rearview mirror.

At the heart of the Apeman Seeker R1 system is a 4K action camera called the Seeker One, which you mount below your saddle to face backwards. This sits inside the Seeker Smart Tail Light, which turns on automatically when it gets dark and has a 50-lumen rapid flashing mode, alongside a 35-lumen mode to conserve battery.

But perhaps the neatest two features of the Seeker R1 are its anti-collision laser bike lane and ability to give you a rearview mirror for occasional checks behind you. The former uses lasers to project a virtual bike lane onto the road, to make sure drivers give you a wide berth. Early photos suggest this will project quite a narrow lane, but hopefully it'll be possible to make manual tweaks.

Thanks to the 'Go Ape' companion app (we wonder if that name may change, if the outdoor adventure company notices), you can also get a view of the road behind you, assuming your phone is mounted on the handlebars. Naturally, you'll want to keep your eyes on the road most of the time, but it could be useful for a quick glance if you're worried about an approaching truck.

This app also includes an 'SR Sense Mode', which Apeman says will serve up basic riding data like your speed, mileage and the incline of the road you're on. Apeman says the Seeker R1 mount also comes with its own 5,000mAh battery, which can be recharged concurrently with the camera inside.

There's no pricing or availability info yet for the Apeman Seeker R1, but the company says it will be available on Kickstarter in late January.

Analysis: A neat all-in-one concept for cycling safety

Not many of the Apeman Seeker R1's individual safety features are brand new, but it's interesting to see an action camera combine them in one useful system.

The idea of laser bike lanes goes back a decade or so, and many rear lights from the likes of Lezyne include them as an option. A traditional, handlebar-mounted rear-view mirror also arguably makes more practical sense than using a combination of your phone and an action camera.

But Apeman has spotted a gap that isn't currently filled by any GoPro accessories, and if you're after a cycling-specific action cam whose main priority is safety rather than capturing epic downhill biking videos, it could be a Kickstarter campaign that's worth looking out for later this month.

We have previously been impressed by the value offered by Apeman action cameras; the now discontinued Apeman A100 previously topped our guide to the best cheap action cameras . And the company's new Seeker sub-brand will offer a series of options, including a Seeker F1 case with a 150-lumen light that also turns on automatically in the dark, plus the option of buying its dual-screen Seeker One camera on its own.

Gotham Knights will still release this year, but an early 2022 window looks unlikely

Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy are on track to release in 2022, according to WarnerMedia's CEO, Jason Kilar - but an early 2022 release window for Gotham Knights looks increasingly unlikely.

In a lengthy Twitter thread about WarnerMedia's Q4 2021 and full year 2021 results, Kilar touched on the corporation's plans to continue its 2021 strategy "with a sense of urgency" in 2022, with that strategy involving the launch HBO Max in more countries, launching CNN+, and "delivering of a full slate of highly anticipated games".

The tweet then included an image of a Succession billboard and the CNN+ Logo, alongside images of Hogwarts Legacy and Gotham Knights - confirming both games are still on track to release in 2022.

Analysis: but is it all good news?

Confirmation that Hogwarts Legacy and Gotham Knights are still set to release in 2022 isn't a huge surprise , as the official Warner Bros. Brazil Twitter account recently put together a thread of the company's upcoming game releases, which included Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy. While a recent blog post on the Wizarding World website also insisted that Hogwarts Legacy is releasing in 2022.

But while Hogwarts Legacy doesn't have a more defined release window than '2022', and therefore will likely aim for (and hit) release date in the tail end of the year, Gotham Knights looks like it could be headed for another delay.

WB Games Montréal's upcoming action RPG, centered on a Gotham City without Batman, is set to release in early 2022 but, given we still know very little about the game as of January 2022, we imagine an announcement of its delay to later in the year is probably imminent.

But with five games due to release in 2022, two of which are DC titles, when exactly Warner Bros would delay the game until remains to be seen. Fortunately, with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League still without a solid release date Warner Bros. will likely be able to juggle these release dates around to ensure the two games aren't in competition.

Philips Hue’s new outdoor smart lights will help make your garden an extension of your home

Philips Hue has expanded its range of outdoor smart lights, launching three new ranges that enable you to control the brightness and color of the light via the Hue app, just as you can for the brand’s indoor lights.

The Philips Hue Inara wall light combines a vintage-style black lantern housing and, for the first time in the Philips Hue range of outdoor smart lights , with a filament-style bulb for a stylish look.

The warm white filament bulb can be brightened or dimmed from the Hue app, while you can also set the color to an array of white tones, from stark, cool tones to warm, sunset-like shades.

Alternatively, for those who prefer a more modern look, the Philips Hue Lucca wall light comes in both white, and color options - which can be adjusted to illuminate any of 16 million shades, and has a monochrome cylindrical housing.

Philips Hue has also unveiled the Calla Bollard, which is a 25cm-tall pillar light that’s perfect for illuminating pathways or areas of your garden. All three of Hue’s latest smart light ranges are weatherproof.

The Philips Hue Lucca wall light is priced at $99.99 / £79.99 and is available now in the UK, and will launch in the US on March 1, while the Inara wall light, which costs $99.99 / £89.99 will be available from February 8. The Philips Hue Calla Bollard, which is initially only available in the UK, will set you back £119.99 and will also go on sale on February 8.

Opinion: turning the garden into a room you’ll use more often

The amount of time we’re spending outside – and in our gardens, if we’re lucky enough to have one – has risen thanks to the pandemic. Research by insurance firm LV , revealed 30% of Brits spent more time in their garden, either working or relaxing, than usual during lockdown.

With things starting to get back to normal, utilizing gardens as another room in the home is something many of us will stick with – that’s certainly the case for me. I love entertaining, and during lockdown, my small garden proved extremely handy when it came to seeing friends and family safely.

However, the more time I spent socializing outside, the more it became clear that my garden wasn’t quite as homely as I would have liked. Illuminating the garden as it got dark was one of the biggest issues for me, as I’d never really invested in any form of garden lighting for socializing – what outside lighting I did have was for security.

This meant I had no choice other than to use the floodlight on my Arlo Pro 3 security camera to illuminate the garden – although as this switches off automatically after 20 minutes, I was constantly being plunged into darkness and fumbling for my smartphone to switch the light back on.

Now that things are opening up, this year I’m planning to focus my DIY efforts on overhauling the garden, and it's clear that I need some lighting that’s designed to be aesthetically pleasing rather than just functional.

Weatherproof smart lights, including Hue’s range, can be set to work with home security cameras and video doorbells so they illuminate when motion is detected in a bid to deter any would-be intruders. However, unlike the floodlight on my Arlo security camera, they can also be illuminated from the app for any length of time.

Philips Hue is currently the only smart lighting brand that offers weatherproof lights that look stylish as well as being functional – and for those of us using the garden as an extension of our home, this is also important.

I feel slightly embarrassed that my garden isn’t quite as pristine in terms of decoration as the rest of my house, and I welcome the expansion of Hue’s outdoor lighting range and hope other brands such as LIFX and Nanoleaf follow suit.
