By default, support for DVD and some video formats Ubuntu is inactive (for legal reasons).
But it is very easy to activate.
Ubuntu 7.10 1. Type: sudo aptitude install linux-restricted-modules ubuntu-restricted-extras ffmpeg libdvdnav4 2. Type: sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
Ubuntu 7.04 1. First, enable the Universe and Multiverse repositories. (Unnecessary for Ubuntu 7.04 and following) 2. Type: sudo aptitude install ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg gstreamer0.8-misc mplayer vlc mozilla-mplayer xine xine-ui libdvdread3 libdvdplay0 libdvdnav4 flashplugin-nonfree
3. Type: sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
You will be able to read DVDs,videos and music to MPEG, AVI, DivX, QuickTime (mov), RealVideo (rm), 3GP, Windows Media Video (wmv), Matroska (MKV), asf, mp3, wma ... including in Firefox!
You will even have the choice between video players: Totem, Xine, VLC or MPlayer.
