Jabra has announced a new pair of wireless neckband sport earphones, the Sport Pulse wireless earbuds, which use in-ear biometric heart rate monitors to banish the need for a wireless chest or wrist-based HRM that can be inconvenient and uncomfortable to wear on long runs.

As most people like to run while listening to music, it makes sense to integrate the sensor directly into the earbud. It's something that Intel has also been working on in partnership with hip-hop artist 50 Cent's company, SMS Audio, and has been long-rumoured to appear in Apple's iPhone 6 earbuds, but Jabra has got there first with its wireless pair.

Designed to complement its existing Jabra Sport Box wireless and Sport Wireless+ earphones, the earbuds themselves are encased in carbon fibre so should stand up to the rigours of exercise. They're also sweat-proof and, when we met with Jabra earlier in the month to get a first look, we were told they should survive a brief rinse under water as well.  The earbuds also include an integrated step counter in order to help correlate distance when used in conjunction with Jabra's companion smartphone app.

Jabra's dedicated Sport Life app for iOS and Android will help you to plan and track your workouts. We were told the app would also be able to calculate blood VO2 levels through a special algorithm, in addition to providing basic heartrate readings. You can also expect the usual settings and training programmes like distance, time, calories burned or heart rate zones. The app will also include two-way integration with popular running communities like Runkeeper, Endomondo, Strava and more. We were told that Jabra is hoping to eventually integrate with Nike+.

Battery life is expected to be around four hours and the earbuds will automatically stop the music when battery levels become low but heartrate monitoring will continue.

The Jabra Sport Pulse is expected to launch in October for £199. We'll be sure to put them to the test as soon as they're available for review.
