Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One): release date, cast and more
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)'s release is slowly looming over the horizon. Okay, Sony Pictures Animation's next webslinger film is still six months away (at the time of writing), but it is on the way.
And, honestly, we couldn't be more excited. Across the Spider-Verse is one of our most eagerly anticipated movies of 2022, which won't surprise any of you if you equally know how good it is. Spider-Man: No Way Home may have given us a wonderful, fan service-style Marvel movie in December 2021, but Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) has the potential to do even better.
Ahead of its October 2022 launch in theaters, though, what do we know about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)? The latest news surrounding the superhero film concerns its potential cameos, different art styles, and how it could tie directly back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). All of those teases have been delivered by screenwriters Phil Lord and Chris Miller, while lead voice actor Shameik Moore has also hinted at how surreal Spidey's next animated will be. Considering the Spider-Man movies that have come before it, that'll take some doing.
Below, you'll find even more information about all things Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). That includes its release date, first-look teaser, confirmed cast members, its sequel, and more. Equip those webshooters and let's swing into action.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) release date: October 7, 2022
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will be released in theaters on October 7, 2022 . It was originally supposed to land in April 2022 but, like every other movie set to launch over the past two years, the ongoing pandemic delayed its release.
Providing there aren’t any further setbacks, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) shouldn't be pushed back again. Work has been ongoing since November 2018, after all, so its production should be nearing the finish line. Here’s hoping so, anyway.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) trailer: check out the first teaser
Sony Pictures released a Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) teaser at Brazil Comic-Con (CCXP Worlds) in December 2021, which you can view above.
The teaser doesn’t give too much away about the film’s plot (more on this later). But we do see Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy reunite in his universe, Miles travelling to some new dimensions, and his first encounter with Spider-Man 2099. There’s plenty of humor and action to be had within the trailer, too, which shows that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will retain a lot of elements that made the first movie a success.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) cast: who is playing who?
Right now, there are five confirmed cast members, but you can expect this list to grow as further announcements are made:
Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld and Jake Johnson will all reprise their roles from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Meanwhile, Oscar Isaac ( Moon Knight , Star Wars , Dune ) has been bumped up the roster after he made a cameo appearance in the first movie’s post-credits scene.
The only current new cast member is Issa Rae (Insecure), who will portray Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Rae had been added to the film’s cast in June 2021, even though Sony is yet to officially confirm this.
Other Spider-Men and Spider-People are also expected to make an appearance in the sequel. John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham, Kimiko Glenn’s Peni Parker and Nicholas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir may all return, while Across the Spider-Verse’s first trailer teased the potential arrival of Spider-Man India.
Japanese Spider-Man’s appearance has also been hinted at by the film’s co-screenwriter and executive producer Phil Lord (via ScreenRant ). But it’s unclear if this particular iteration of the character will feature just yet.
Live-action Spider-Man stars Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon have all expressed interest in appearing in Across the Spider-Verse, too. The trio are reportedly "just waiting for the phone call," and given that both Lord and Miller have strongly hinted that the upcoming movie could tie into the MCU , their involvement no longer seems like an outside possibility. Speaking to Collider , however, Lord and Miller declined to comment on whether the trio will have cameo roles in Parts One or Two.
Finally, Lord and Miller have teased the possibility of other Spider-Men alumni in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield making appearances. The duo had s upporting roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home , while Across the Spider-Verse will continue Miles' exploration of the Spider-Man multiverse. As such, fans think that the pair could certainly show up in the animated sequel.
Speaking to Variety (thanks to Fandom for the catch) about this prospect Lord said: "It's a high bar to clear. The gauntlet has been thrown [by Spider-Man: No Way Home]", before Miller added: "All things are possible in the multiverse." Watch this space, then.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) plot: what's it about?
Official plot details are thin on the ground, but we do know some elements about its story.
First, the movie’s official synopsis (via Collider ) reads as follows: “Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”
Speaking exclusively to Entertainment Weekly (EW) after the first trailer’s reveal, Lord and long time writing partner Chris Miller explained why they made the decision to split the next chapter in Miles’ story into Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 and Part 2.
"Miles' story is an epic," Miller and Lord said. "We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We're working on them both as we speak.”
Lord and Miller also cryptically hinted at the numerous universes that Miles and company will travel to, telling EW: "Every dimension looks and feels radically different from all the others. They all look like they were drawn by a different artist."
The duo doubled down on that promise in another interview with Collider , with Miller adding: “It's a very ambitious sequel, because we didn’t want to just sort of do the same thing again. And so the idea that we’d be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically to have each world have its own art style, and to be able to push the folks at [Sony Pictures] ImageWorks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand. Seeing the development of that stuff is breath taking, and really, it’s the reason we keep doing it, because it’s so hard to get it right.”
As mentioned, both producers have also hinted that Across the Spider-Verse may tie into the MCU. Speaking on an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lord and Miller teased that the events of No Way Home could have implications for Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey in the upcoming Sony picture.
"The multiverse is big and wide,” Miller said, “and all things grow... Why would you think [that in] a multiverse, in which many things are possible, that [those things are] not related?"
"Everything's possible except for this one thing that everyone wants,” Lord added sarcastically. It’s clear, then, that Across the Spider-Verse will deliver on its promise of fan service while also breaking new narrative ground for the decades-old character.
"The writers and director[s] are all buddies of ours, so we sort of have been in the loop as far as what's going on [in other movies],” Lord said on the same podcast. “And we are always trying to make sure we're not stepping on each other's toes and telling different types of stories, and different themes, and all that stuff – because people want an original story that feels new and interesting. It's our job to give it to them."
In another tease, Lord told IndieWire that their hugely successful Netflix movie – The Mitchells Vs. The Machines – gave them the confidence to push Across the Spider-Verse's visuals even further, saying: “It’s been fun to have the confidence, to go even harder and push the medium even further and take Miles [Morales] to places you couldn’t imagine.” Fingers crossed we see some truly mind-boggling animation in both movies.
And what of the potential for characters to return from the first movie? As you’ve probably guessed, the duo simply teased to EW: "Miles will reunite with some old friends and meet... a lot of new ones."
With those official comments out of the way, what can we determine from what we’ve seen of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), and where its predecessor left off?
For starters, it seems that Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) takes place sometime after Into the Spider-Verse. Miles and Gwen look older than they did in the first film, so we’re guessing that it’s been one year or two years since they said their goodbyes in Into the Spider-Verse.
Next, we know that Miles and company will be jumping between dimensions in Across the Spider-Verse, which reverses the events of the first film where multiple Spider-People crossed over into Miles’ reality. We’ve already seen a pencil-sketched world, as well as being transported to Earth-928 (Spider-Man 2099’s universe), in the first trailer. So we know we’ll be seeing two new realities, at the very least, in Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).
As for who the mysterious villain is, it’s highly unlikely to be Spider-Man 2099. Yes, he’s seen grappling with Miles in the movie’s first teaser, but we’re confident that he’s simply trying to recruit Miles in order to stop the film’s supervillain from presumably wreaking havoc across the multiverse. We’ve taken a look at the most likely candidate for the villain in our Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) Easter eggs article , so check that out to get our thoughts on who it may be.
It sounds like Parts One and Two will be full of emotional story beats, much like Into the Spider-Verse. Lord and Miller revealed that there’s one particular scene concerning Spider-Gwen that will really tug at our heartstrings. Based on another of their answers in a tweet above, too, we’ll see Miles grappling with what it truly means to be a Spider-Man in this film.
All of this, then, has made us really excited for Across the Spider-Verse. Although it'll be a while before fans get to see it, one particular cast member has already started hyping it up – Shameik Moore taking to Twitter to offer his brief verdict on what he's seen so far:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) sequel: when will Part Two arrive?
There’s no official release date for the follow-up yet. In their chat with EW, Lord and Miller revealed that Part Two should release in 2023, but neither was forthcoming with an exact launch date.
Again, the ongoing pandemic may affect when it arrives. Nobody knows what the situation will look like in 2023, so it’s likely Sony are keeping their options open. We imagine they all have some idea of when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two) will arrive, but that may change if the pandemic hasn’t subsided by then.
If we had to guess, we’d say that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two) will launch in theaters in late 2023. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrived in December 2018, while Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) comes out in October 2022. If Sony and Marvel stick to a similar release schedule for Part Two, it’ll likely be released between October and December 2023.
The Legend of Vox Machina animated series: the Critical Role TV show explained
It's official: The Legend of Vox Machina is coming to the small screen.
After an incredibly successful 2019 Kickstarter campaign saw $11 million pledged towards an animated series based on Campaign 1 of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role, a 24-episode show is headed to Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
Hosted by an array of esteemed American voice actors, and with a thriving international fan base, Critical Role may be the best-known example of 'actual play' D&D, where a group of friends get together and stream their dice-rolling adventures at the table. (You can check out our best D&D podcasts and web series guide for an introduction to a few more.)
Whether you're new to the world of Critical Role, or a seasoned fan looking forward to a new way to experience its lore, the imminent arrival of The Legend of Vox Machina should provide some well-deserved small screen exposure for this beloved universe.
Below, we'll run you through what to expect in terms of the show's story, voice cast, streaming access, and more – as well as the likelihood of a follow-up series based on Critical Role's second and third campaigns.
The Legend of Vox Machina release date
The Legend of Vox Machina is arriving on Prime Video January 28, 2022.
Like much of the film and TV industry throughout 2020, the show ran into production troubles in light of the ongoing pandemic. It was initially slated to start dropping episodes in "Fall 2020" (September-December), though its release date was revised to 2022.
According to Amazon, the first season will consist of 12 episodes released over four weeks, with three episodes premiering every week. The already-green-lit second season is expected to follow later in the year.
The Legend of Vox Machina: where can you watch it?
The Legend of Vox Machina will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, after the streaming service stepped in to back the animated series for an additional 14 episodes on top of the 10 episodes funded through the Kickstarter .
Backers will still get the entire first season as part of their pledge, and early access to the opening two episodes of the season, though the exact details and timings of this remain unclear.
We're also told that "the series will be dubbed, subtitled, and otherwise localized for our very much global audience".
The Legend of Vox Machina story and characters
For those of you expecting a retread of Campaign 1, that won't quite be the case.
The Kickstarter for the show reveals that the animated series will cover a "brand new story" and "in-canon adventure", created by the cast and scripted by screenwriter Jennifer Muro, who has worked on other animated series' such as Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Spider-Man, and Justice League: Action.
The first two episodes will act as a prequel adventure, with the original members of Vox Machina at level 7 prior to the streamed episodes – which kick off with the party's arrival at the Dwarven city of Kraghammer.
However, the successful stretch goals will mean that the Briarwoods arc from the streamed campaign will also get its own batch of animated episodes.
The Legend of Vox Machina trailers
You can get a sense of the show's art style, humor and scope in its latest trailer, which we've included below.
Prior to the above trailer's release, though, we were treated to the animated intro for the series, which shows off the party members of Vox Machina: Keyleth the druid, Percy the gunslinger, Grog the barbarian, Pike the cleric, Scanlan the bard, Vex the ranger, and Vax the rogue.
The soundtrack here is the same one used for intros to current actual play episodes, which we expect will be used in some form for the final animated series.
In mid-2020, the Critical Role team also released a behind-the-scenes video of the ongoing animation work happening at Titmouse, which included artist interviews and examples of the show's environmental art.
The Legend of Vox Machina: who's involved?
Naturally, the original cast for Campaign 1: Vox Machina will be reprising their roles for the animated series.
It helps that the whole cast are quite seasoned voice actors in their own right: Laura Bailey having voiced both Kat from Gears 5 and Abby from The Last of Us Part 2 , Ashley Johnson voicing Ellie in The Last of Us games, Matt Mercer voicing Levi in the English dub of Attack on Titan and McCree in the PvP game Overwatch, and Sam Riegel having voiced Phoenix Wright in the Ace Attorney games, to name but a few of the cast's immense catalogue of credits.
There's been no word yet on guest appearances, with Critical Role often featuring outside players for one-off games or small plot arcs, with Will Wheaton and Joe Manganiello both appearing in Campaign 1. We would expect guests to reprise their roles where relevant, though.
The Kickstarter page states that, "to round out the main cast, we’ll bring in some extra special celebrity cameos, as well as voice over industry legends."
The animation studio at the heart of it all is Titmouse, an American outfit that produces a host of animated programming, including shows for Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney XD, Fox, and Hulu. Some of the studio's most notable output is for Netflix, as with the Netflix show Big Mouth (starring John Mulaney) and The Midnight Gospel.
The artists working on The Legend of Vox Machina will specifically be "led by Art Director Arthur Loftis and Supervising Director Sung Jin Ahn."
Critical Role has announced that "the vast majority of our resources" (around 74%) would go "into the animation budget."
The Mighty Nein animated series: could it happen?
For now, the Critical Role team is occupied with the animated series of their first campaign, Vox Machina, but the popularity of subsequent seasons could pave the way for more spin-off shows based on Critical Role's other campaigns and storylines.
Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein concluded in June 2021, while Campaign 3 began in October the same year, so there's no shortage of D&D adventures to translate to the small screen.
It's likely we won't hear anything about a Mighty Nein animated series for a while yet, but the overwhelming interest in the Kickstarter for Vox Machina suggests there's a lot of mileage in animated adaptations of Critical Role's ongoing hijinks.
